What she said – on craft

Over at Craft Nectar, Weeks Ringle has some very smart things to say about the the importance of craftsmanship regardless of the amount of improv in your design. Motion seconded.

One of the things I’m always saying to my students is get the craft right. Command your rotary cutter. Nail down the 1/4″ seam. Learn to press properly. Once these skills are in your tool box whatever you make will be so much more enjoyable to construct because it will fit and work and flow. When you you don’t have to fight your skills, sewing becomes play. And who doesn’t want to play!

To Do: Build Rome…

As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. And centuries later, Rome is still very much a work in progress.

And so I draw the analogy to this site… certainly haven’t build it in a day. I’m hacking my way through the tools and expect to make it messier before I make it prettier. But like Rome, it will evolve and come to serve its purpose – hopefully with grace and humor. And if all goes according to plan, in waaaaaaay less than centuries. Heck, a few days would work well for me. Assuming I haven’t taken an axe to the computer before then!

So in the meantime, I’m grateful for your patience. Stop back soon :-)
